2021 BAFTA nominations: Black women dominate lead actress category, women lead for directors

The 2021 EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) nominations are in with many nominations for Black actors and actresses.

The film His House by writer and director Remi Weekes is about a refugee couple that escapes South Sudan only to struggle to adjust to life in England. It is nominated for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer and Outstanding British Film.

Disney’s Soul, starring Jamie Foxx as the first Black lead in a film for Pixar, is nominated for Animated Film, Sound and Original Score.

Rocks is the story of a young Black girl taking care of her younger brother when abandoned by her mother. The film received nominations in the categories of Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, Director, Original Screenplay, Leading Actress, Supporting Actress, and Casting.

Black women dominate the Leading Actress category with nominations for Bukky Bakray, Radha Blank, Wunmi Mosaku and Alfre Woodard.

The late Chadwick Boseman is nominated for Leading Actor for his role in Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His performance in this role also landed him a Golden Globe in February.

The Netflix film received three nominations.

For Supporting Actress Kosar Ali of Rocks and Dominique Fishback of Judas and the Black Messiah have been nominated.

In the Supporting Actor category, Daniel Kaluuya of Judas and the Black Messiah, who won a Golden Globe in February, and Leslie Odom Jr. of One Night in Miami received nominations.

Judas and the Black Messiah also received nominations for Cinematography and Casting.

Tenet, starring John David Washington, was nominated for special visual effects.
