While free throws were being taken, James and Stewart jockeyed for position on the line. James then swung his arm with a closed fist and struck Stewart in the face. As blood profusely trickled down Stewart’s face, he rushed angrily towards James, but teammates from both teams quickly intervened.

Both James and Stewart were ejected from the game.

James was suspended for one game, causing him to miss the nationally televised game at Madison Square Garden against the New York Knicks on Wednesday. Stewart will miss upcoming games against the Miami Heat and Milwaukee Bucks.

According to the NBA, Stewart received a harsher penalty for “escalating an on-court altercation by repeatedly and aggressively pursuing” James.
