A 10-year-old Black girl was arrested last year over an “offensive sketch” and the ACLU is seeking $500,000 in damages. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Hawaii is calling for policy changes after a 10-year-old Black girl was arrested at her school over a drawing, CNN reported.
ACLU of Hawaii on Monday asked the Honolulu Police Department, the state Department of Education and the state attorney general’s office to erase the child’s record, pay half a million dollars in damages and change their policies for “harm and suffering.”
According to the organization, a parent complained about a drawing made by the child at Honowai Elementary School in January 2020.
The child was reportedly “handcuffed with excessive force and taken to the police station,” the ACLU said in its letter to the agencies.
According to CNN the girl’s mother, Tanara Taylor, said she was not allowed to see her daughter, identified as “N.B.,” but was told that she was “handcuffed in front of staff and her peers, placed into a squad car and taken away.”
“I was stripped of my rights as a parent and my daughter was stripped of her right to protection and representation as a minor. There was no understanding of diversity, African American culture and the history of police involvement with African-American youth. My daughter and I are traumatized from these events and I’m disheartened to know that this day will live with my daughter forever,” she said in a statement through the ACLU.
The ACLU said the student drew the “offensive sketch” in response to being bullied by a student, per CNN.
The Honolulu Police Department told CNN it’s in the process of reviewing the ACLU’S letter and is working to address the allegations made.
