Anthony Bernard Carter, Victim of Atlanta Child Murders, Receives Headstone

In 1980, Carter was murdered during a killing spree that affected Atlanta, Georgia. His grave was unmarked for over 40 years.

The body of Anthony Bernard Carter, who was tragically murdered during a killing spree that decimated Atlanta, rested in an unmarked grave in Hogansville, Georgia for over four decades. 

However, that changed on Oct. 24 when family members, activists and local business owners came together to unveil a memorial for Carter, according to CNN. On July 7, 1980, he was found dead with stab wounds to the chest and back at nine years of age.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 29 Black men and boys were killed in Atlanta from 1979 to 1981 in one of the most violent serial murder cases in American history. 

The headstone was placed in the area it is believed where Carter was laid to rest, in a cemetery in Hogansville, close to 55 miles southwest of Atlanta.  

In March 2019, authorities reopened the investigation to look into the murders that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. They looked at evidence with the expectation of technological advancements could locate a suspect in the cases in which most of them weren’t solved

The family of Anthony Bernard Carter is hopeful that with the reopening of the investigation, their case will be solved with the location of the killer, according to CNN. Carter’s death has been immensely difficult for his 85-year-old aunt Hazel Jenkins. 

According to CNN, Carter stayed with Jenkins while his mother, Vera Jenkins, went to Atlanta for an unknown reason in the 1970s.

“He didn’t have a good life. He never had a chance,” Jenkins said to CNN. “He was a sweet child.”
