In Summary
As a result of her stance on the passage of voting rights legislation, Senator Kyrsten Sinema has been formally censured by the Arizona Democratic Party. In response to her inaction on changing the filibuster rules to pass voting rights reform, the Arizona Democratic Party’s executive committee has censured Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, CNN reported.
A censure, according to the United States Senate, is less severe than expulsion and does not result in a senator’s removal from office. It is seen as a formal expression of displeasure that can greatly impact a senator and their political relationships.

In a statement shared on Twitter, Arizona Democratic Party chairman Raquel Terán said the decision to reprimand Sinema was made as a result of her refusal to do whatever it takes to ensure the health of our democracy.
“I want to be clear, the Arizona Democratic Party is a diverse coalition with plenty of room for policy disagreements, however on the matter of the filibuster and the urgency to protect voting rights, we have been crystal clear,” per the statement. “In the choice between an archaic legislative norm and protecting Arizonans’ right to vote, we choose the latter, and we always will.”
Sinema, who began her political career as a progressive before joining the Democratic Party in 2004, was also a vocal opponent of President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion Build Back Better Act and advocated for its cost to be reduced.
According to a statement from her office, she supports Democrats’ voting rights initiatives, but opposes “longstanding opposition” that would only “deepen our divisions” and reinforce confusion, eroding confidence in our government further.
“During three terms in the U.S. House, and now in the Senate, Kyrsten has always promised Arizonans she would be an independent voice for the state—not for either political party,” spokesperson Hannah Hurley said following the censure, per CNN. “She’s delivered for Arizonans and has always been honest about where she stands.”
