Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced that she would not run for another term. 

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, she made the announcement to staffers and friends on a private call Thursday night. Early reports also indicated that she accepted a position at Fortune 500 company Walgreens. 

On Friday morning, Bottoms addressed the media to make the formal announcement. She said serving as the city’s mayor was one of her highest honors, speaking as she held back tears. Citing her family’s history in the city dating back about 100 years, she said she stands on the shoulders of her ancestors who “found community” in Atlanta.

In her words, Atlanta experienced a tough four years since she was elected. She cited the cyberattack that impacted the city’s government, COVID-19, protests over the killing of Rayshard Brooks and the Trump administration. 

Bottoms said reports about her going to Walgreens are incorrect and she did not say if she would take a position elsewhere. Her campaign has reached out to donors to refund all campaign contributions. She said she will finish her term and did not comment if she would stay in politics.
