Atlanta Mayor Mandates Masks in All Public Spaces as Delta Variant Spreads

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms signed an executive order mandating residents to wear masks while inside public spaces, even if they’re vaccinated.

Bottoms’ decision comes after Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he would not issue a new mask mandate as coronavirus cases surge due to the Delta variant, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.

“Public health experts overwhelmingly agree, and data has proved, that wearing a face-covering helps slow the spread of this deadly virus,” said Mayor Bottoms. “As COVID-19 rates increase, we must remain vigilant, wear a mask, follow CDC guidelines and other measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities.”

According to the order, “all persons in a public place, including private businesses and establishments, to wear a mask or a cloth face covering over their nose and mouth when indoors.”

Bottoms’ executive order would not impact people eating, drinking, or in their homes.

The first time someone violates the order, they receive a warning, the second time, they’re fined $25 with subsequent fines being $50 for every offense, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
