The police officer shot Ma’Khia Bryant on April 20, 2021, on the same day that Derek Chauvin was found guilty of the murder of George Floyd. 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant was in an intense argument with two other foster women about cleaning up their foster house in Columbus, Ohio, according to her foster mother Angela Moore.
As a result, Columbus police were called to the scene because of a report of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, Bryant was going after one of the women with a knife. Then, things turned for the worse, as the young teenager was shot four times by a Columbus police officer and died.

Bryant’s mother, Paula Bryant, described her as a loving and peaceful child during an interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo three days after her daughter’s death.
“The killing needs to stop. There’s been too many killings in the world. I want the killing to stop. I’ve always had sympathy for the Breonna Taylor story and her family and her friends and her situation,” said Bryant. “Now, I know what it feels like to lose a child. Ma’Khia is gone, and I want the killing in the world to stop and that’s what Ma’Khia would want.”
