Ben Carson Says Critical Race Theory Is ‘Infiltrating Everything’

In Summary

Carson made the comments in response to NYC guidance that advises race and ethnicity to be considered for a specific COVID-19 treatment.

Dr. Ben Carson is making headlines again after commenting on critical race theory and how it is “infiltrating everything.”

Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and the former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for the Trump administration, made the comments on The Chris Salcedo Show on Newsmax, a conservative media outlet.

According to the network, Carson was responding to guidance from New York City that the race and ethnicity of a patient should be taken into account when distributing COVID-19 treatment. On the official city website, under the Oral Antiviral Eligibility section, it said, “Consider race and ethnicity when assessing individual risk. Longstanding systemic health and social inequities may contribute to an increased risk of getting sick and dying from COVID-19.”

Carson reacted to the guidance on the network, saying, “I certainly don’t think that the virus discriminates. I think it takes everybody. And this is absolutely absurdity. We’ve gone crazy. This is, you know, critical race theory infiltrating everything.”

While he said the virus doesn’t discriminate, he acknowledged how certain groups are impacted by certain health conditions. “The fact of the matter is Black people, Hispanics, people of lower socioeconomic status, do tend to have more hypertension, more diabetes, more underlying comorbid conditions that would make them more vulnerable,” he said. “But if you take all comers, if you take people who are sick, you will have more of those individuals anyway. So you don’t have to put in some kind of extra restraining in terms of determining who should get what. That doesn’t make any sense.”

Critical race theory has been under attack by both conservative politicians and their supporters. According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, critical race theory (CRT) is “an academic and legal framework that denotes that systemic racism is part of American society–from education and housing to employment and healthcare.” The theory recognizes that racism comes more from individual bias and prejudice but highlights how racism is embedded in laws, policies, and institutions that prevent racial equality.
