Rev. Bernice King said people against critical race theory are misrepresenting it and creating “false narratives.”
Additionally, she said the U.S. needs a change in priorities that “helps us understand we can’t commemorate my father on the one hand while also promoting false narratives under the banner of critical race theory,” according to AP.
“CRT is not the problem. Racism is the problem, poverty or extreme materialism is the problem and militarism, war is the problem,” King said.
Critical race theory is “an academic and legal framework that denotes that systemic racism is part of American society–from education and housing to employment and healthcare,” according to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
Numerous GOP-led states have instituted bans on public schools from teaching CRT, which is normally not taught in public schools.

In her address, King also spoke about the importance of getting voting rights legislation passed, calling it a “very urgent need,” adding that it’s “crucial to humanity across the globe that the United States of America stands as a democratic nation.”
King’s comments came before President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris went to Atlanta to talk about the need to pass voting rights legislation.
