Bill Cosby’s Legal Team Believes It Can Help R. Kelly Step Into Freedom

In Summary

R. Kelly is calling on the forces that helped Bill Cosby become a free man, hoping the legal team can do the same for him following his conviction on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.

R. Kelly seems to believe he can fly out of trouble with help from the right legal team, because he’s hired Bill Cosby’s attorney Jennifer Bonjean to appeal his sex trafficking and racketeering conviction, per the Chicago Tribune

Kelly was found guilty in September of all nine charges in his racketeering and sex trafficking case following weeks of testimony from more than 50 witnesses, including an underage male. He is set to be sentenced in May 2022 and potentially faces life in prison.

The claims leveled against him included tempting and coercing a minor, enticing a minor to participate in sexual behavior while making visual records of it, and using threatening force to obtain sexual services from minors.

Despite the conviction and numerous graphic testimonies, Kelly’s legal team believes it can set the singer free from the Brooklyn federal prison—just as they did for Cosby in June.

“I am becoming increasingly concerned with how the government is abusing the RICO statute in order to plead around the statute of limitations and essentially put people’s entire lives on trial,” Bonjean told the Tribune. “It’s becoming a formula for the government. You have a right to defend yourself against specific allegations.”

Bonjean stated that for Cosby, who had served almost three years of a 10-year term in a Pennsylvania prison, “the presumption of innocence simply did not exist.”

The beloved actor who was once dubbed “America’s Dad” was convicted in 2018 of molesting and drugging Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee. The alleged incident happened in 2004, but Cosby was not arrested until 2015, just as the 12-year statute of limitations was about to expire.

“Mr. Cosby should never have been prosecuted for these offenses. District attorneys can’t change it up simply because of their political motivation,” Bonjean told the Chicago Sun-Times at the time.

Bonjean has already requested a two-month extension on post-trial motions due Monday, as well as a new trial for the fallen R&B artist, with plans to appeal to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals if her request is denied.
