Porter previously said Vogue chose “a straight white man” on the cover instead of a person from the LGBTQ+ community. Porter is known for representing gender fluidity in fashion, especially on the red carpet. Porter said Styles’ interest in challenging gender norms in fashion is not motivated by lived experiences.

“I changed the whole game. I personally changed the whole game and that is not ego. That is just fact,” Porter said. “He doesn’t care. He’s just doing it because it’s the thing to do. This is politics for me. This is my life. All he has to do is be white and straight.”
On Thursday, Porter was a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and said a “slow news day” was the reason his initial comments about Styles became so popular. He then clarified that his comments go beyond Styles. “The conversation is actually deeper than that,” he said. “It is about the systems of oppression and erasure of people of color who contribute to the culture.”

Porter went on to express that he does not have a problem with Styles. “I’m a gay man,” he said. “We like Harry. He’s cute!”
