Black actors win several Golden Globes as HFPA criticized for lack of Black members

Black actors won several awards at the 2021 Golden Globes on Sunday held virtually due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The organization responsible for nominations, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was harshly criticized for its lack of Black members, according to the New York Times.

As Tina Fey and Amy Poehler opened the program, Poehler said, ” a number of Black actors and Black-led projects were overlooked.”


As the HFPA dealt with criticism over diversity, Andra Day, Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Kaluuya, Soul, and John Boyega took home awards.

Daniel Kaluuya won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture for Judas and the Black Messiah.


During his acceptance speech, Kaluuya said he gave everything in his portrayal of activist Fred Hampton.

John Boyega won Best Performance by an Actor in a Television supporting Role for Small Axe.


Pixar’s Soul won Best Motion Picture – Animated. Jamie Foxx served as Pixar’s first Black lead in the film.


The film also won Best Original Score – Motion Picture.


Andra Day’s portrayal of Billie Holiday in Hulu’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday earned her the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.

During her emotional acceptance speech, Day thanked her team and God for the win.


In an interview with the Golden Globes, the singer-songwriter spoke about how Billie Holiday has inspired her own music.

Chadwick Boseman won Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Boseman’s widow Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award on his behalf.

Boseman died at the age of 43 from colon cancer.
