In Summary

This comes after real estate agent Eric Brown was handcuffed by Michigan police along with his client Roy Thorne and his 15-year-old son Samuel.

A Black father, his son and a Black real estate agent have taken matters into their own hands by filing a lawsuit on Oct. 1 against Wyoming, Michigan, six police officers and the Wyoming police chief after being ordered by police out of the residence they were looking at and handcuffed, according to CNN

In the lawsuit, they seek unspecified damages on five counts, accusing the six police officers of infringing upon their civil rights. According to CNN, it also includes intentional infliction, false imprisonment and emotional distress.

This incident occurred on Aug 1. as officers were answering a neighbor’s call about an individual who was arrested in that area a week prior. Real estate agent Eric Brown was showing a client by the name of Roy Thorne and his 15-year-old son Samuel a house in Wyoming, which is just outside of Grand Rapids.

Police then arrived outside of the residence with their guns drawn. They ordered the three individuals to come outside with their hands up and were handcuffed, according to CNN.

They were later released after Brown told the officers that he is a real estate agent. He said at that moment it was racial profiling.

“I don’t feel like a home that had been on the market for this length of time with the number of showings, given the climate and activity in our market, that no one else had that level of force or response respond,” Brown said to CNN’s Don Lemon in August.

The lawsuit also claims that the officers didn’t have evidence linking Brown, Thorne or his son to the incident the week prior because their license plates and cars did not match the actual suspect, according to CNN.
