In Summary
A transgender actor who worked on “Hamilton” for “more than three years,” has filed a lawsuit against the Broadway hit, accusing other cast members of intentionally and repeatedly misgendering and mistreating them.Suni Reid, a Black nonbinary transgender former cast member of Hamilton, has filed a lawsuit with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging harassment, physical threats and purposeful misgendering by other cast members, per NBC News.
The majority of the harassment occurred in the changing rooms of male performers Reid worked with in New York and Chicago, according to the lawsuit filed against the Eliza Tour and Adventureland LLC parent company. Reid also claims the musical, “refused to renew their contract” when they requested a gender-neutral dressing room at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre in California.

“Publicly, ‘Hamilton’ is a beacon of diversity and appears committed to causes seeking social justice and harmony,” Reid’s lawyers Lawrence M. Pearson and Lindsay M. Goldbrum said in a statement. “Behind the curtain, however, the Company’s management will force out a Black, transgender cast member simply because they stood up for themselves and advocated for a more equitable workplace, and therefore called that public image into question.”
Playbill’s Ryan McPhee reports that Reid shared a number of these experiences on Instagram during lockdown due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The production then used the posts to back their decision in suspending Reid’s contract renewal.

According to Hollywood Reporter’s Abbey White, Reid had ensemble roles as George Washington, Aaron Burr and Hercules Mulligan/James Madison in the Los Angeles, Chicago and Broadway productions, between October 2017 and March 2019. They also spent about a year as a standby lead for the same role, plus Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson.
In a statement to NBC News on Wednesday, a Hamilton spokesman denied the allegations and said Reid was treated with the same care and consideration as the rest of the Hamilton team.
