In 2019, she released the hit single “Deliver Me (This Is My Exodus),” with Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers. Aside from her Grammy, Johnson also won two Stellar Awards in 2020, including the Albertina Walker Female Vocalist of the Year and Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year.

Johnson said she loves what she does because it gives her the opportunity to be transparent with her supporters. She’s endured struggles in her life, including the death of her brother several years ago. He was her manager and she said his death has been difficult to handle. “He was one of my greatest supporters and we lost him in 2016,” she said. “It’s been dangerously rough for me and that’s what I don’t think a lot of people understand, that a lot of things come from missing my brother, but you know, he’s smiling down.”

The 38-year-old mother uses her faith as the root to getting through all of the challenges life throws her way. “I’m a mother of four, I’m separated, divorced now, so I’m doing a lot on my own,” she said. “And trying to juggle a sound mind and learning to love myself. So, I’m juggling a lot.”

Johnson said her experiences and her battles in life will be put into her next album in hopes of inspiring and uplifting others.
