U.S. Capitol Police officers who were attacked during the insurrection at the Capitol filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump on Thursday, alleging he and others sent the violent mob to the Capitol to prevent Congress from certifying the election, according to the Associated Press.
According to the suit, which was filed in a federal court in D.C., Trump, his allies and far-right extremists “worked with white supremacists, violent extremist groups, and campaign supporters to violate the Ku Klux Klan Act, and commit acts of domestic terrorism in an unlawful effort to stay in power.”
In addition to Trump, the lawsuit names Roger Stone, the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and the Trump campaign, per AP. The lawsuit was filed by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law on behalf of seven officers.
The officers claim that the former president’s actions led to the siege of the Capitol that harmed dozens of officers.
As reported by AP, the lawsuit also named people who have been charged with federal crimes related to the attack as defendants, claiming they “conspired to use force, intimidation, and threats to prevent Joe Biden and Kamala Harris from taking office, to prevent Congress from counting the electoral votes, and to prevent the Capitol Police from carrying out their lawful duties.”
