According to CNN, Robinson went missing after leaving a work site in the Arizona desert. He was reported missing on June 23 by his father.

A collision report was conducted and officers with the Buckeye Police Department said Robinson’s Jeep Renegade sped up immediately before it crashed in a ravine in an area in the desert. They believe the sudden acceleration could “indicate an attempt to drive up the other side of the ravine.”

On July 19, the vehicle was found less than three miles away from the work site where Robinson was last seen. According to his family, a pile of his clothing and several of his belongings were also discovered near the area.

The collision reconstruction report also indicates dozens of attempts to restart the car after the initial crash.

Robinson’s family has hired a private investigator and assembled a volunteer search team after his father said police weren’t making progress in the search for his son. “Once Daniel became missing, we realized that, I think, the quick action wasn’t there quick enough,” Daniel’s father, David Robinson, told CNN. “That caused me to have to do my own searching.”

Like many other Black parents, David Robinson has compared the coverage of his son’s case to that of Gabby Petito, a missing white woman whose case received national attention and resources from multiple federal and local police agencies.

Although he has expressed sympathy for Petito’s family, as the woman was found dead, he wishes his son’s case would receive the same resources and dedication. “You wish you lived in a world where everything was equal, but it’s really not equal,” he said.
