‘Carol’s Daughter’ Owner, Celebrity Doula Create Organization to Combat Black Maternal Morbidity

Two Black women have teamed up to raise awareness about the health crisis that Black mothers face during pregnancy and childbirth.
Black women are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. This disparity increases with age, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Lisa Price, the founder of Carol’s Daughter, and celebrity doula Latham Thomas, creator of the Mama Glow Foundation, joined forces to start Love Delivered.
The organization plans to raise awareness about Black maternal health amongst 100 million people. They plan to engage 10,000 people to be advocates for Black birthing people over the next three years.
It also says it will “empower, support and equip Black birthing people and the greater community to advocate for their health and wellness by providing expanded access to doula services, trainings for doulas, and resources for families, birth workers, partners, and allies to be well-informed in supporting positive birthing experiences.”

The organization also plans to work with lawmakers to pass H.R. 959, also known as the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2021.
The bill, introduced by Representative Lauren Underwood, has twelve key points that will address social determinants of health, funding for community-based organizations, studying risk factors for pregnant and postpartum veterans and diversifying the prenatal workforce.
Price and Thomas joined Start Your Day with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss Love Delivered and the organization’s goals.
