Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot Wants City to Sue Area Gangs

In Summary

Mayor Lori Lightfoot introduced a measure allowing Chicago to sue gangs because of rising violence in the city.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot introduced an ordinance on Tuesday which would give the city the ability to sue Chicago gangs to hold them accountable for violence in the area.

Lightfoot wants Chicago to be able to seize guns, cars, jewelry and money from gangs, according to FOX 32 Chicago.

“What we are proposing is a tool in civil courts that gives us the opportunity to go after those gangs that are wreaking havoc and in particular, take away the profit motive from them by seizing assets that they have been able to purchase because of their violent acts in our neighborhoods,” Lightfoot said.

She added, “As a city, we are using every tool to push back against the gangs that are leaving a trail of blood, death, and misery in their wake.”

According to Fox 32, the ordinance needs to be passed by the City Council before it can go into effect.
