A horse named after Breonna Taylor was the winner of a Derby Week competition at Churchill Downs.

“Breonna” beat out five other horses by a wide margin in wet and muddy conditions, CNN reported. According to WAVE 3 News, Aguiar watched the event with Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, in his office.
Aguiar’s wife Janelle came up with the idea for the horse’s name as she took Breonna’s death to heart.

On Facebook, Janelle wrote, “Anytime we win a horse race is exciting…But it takes it to a new level when you name your horse Breonna in honor of #BreonnaTaylor, the horse wins at Churchill Downs on Derby week, and you hear so many people #SayHerName.”

Taylor was shot and killed by police officers with the Louisville Metro Police Department as they were executing a no-knock warrant in March 2020. All three officers involved in the shooting were fired, but only one was charged for firing his gun into the home of Taylor’s neighbor.

In April, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the Justice Department launched a civil investigation into the Louisville Metro Police Department’s patterns and practices.
