The trial of Derek Chauvin has sprung up more traumatic feelings as eyewitness testimony has been an emotional rollercoaster ride all week.

Sr. Dir of Criminal Justice Campaigns for Color of Change Scott Roberts joins Start Your Day with Sharon and Mike to discuss the challenges of battling the traumatic experience this trial stirs up.

“First of all, this a real cultural event around the issues of anti-blackness, police violence against Black people,” Roberts said. “It is very rare that we see this live on TV.”

According to Roberts, similar cases do not receive this much attention because they don’t get past a grand jury.

He also speaks to the reoccurring trauma that people face in the midst of so many tragedies and how the increased accessibility to the trial shows a different level of trauma with witness testimony.

“It is a very difficult time for those of us who were outraged last year around this case to have to watch it all process again,” he said. “Then a deeper level of trauma because we are watching the witness come forward and we are seeing the defense to try and demonize them as what he refers them to as the crowd.”

Roberts believes that there needs to be a reset in how public safety should not only be handled by law enforcement, stating that “we have to be willing to reimagine something new to improve the situation.”
