Judge Monte Watkins vacated Abu-Ali Abdur’Rahman’s conviction because he determined Abdur’Rahman was never given a Constitutional right to a fair trial.
As part of a plea deal following the voided conviction, Abdur’Rahman pleaded guilty to murder, attempted murder, and armed robbery. The charges bring on three consecutive life sentences, but he will not be put to death.

In 2019, after Abdur’Rahman’s attorneys presented evidence that potential Black and white jurors for his trial weren’t treated equally, Watkins threw out the death sentence. That move prompted Tennessee’s Attorney General’s Office to appeal, saying Judge Watkins didn’t have the power to change the sentence based solely on an agreement with the district attorney, according to AP.
The state’s Attorney General’s Office told AP in an email that it is reviewing the judge’s order and “considering next steps.”
