The trial of Smollett is the climax of the case that started on the night of January 29, 2019. On that date, the actor told police two men attacked him, made racist and anti-gay remarks, poured bleach on him and put a noose around his neck, as reported by CNN.
However, authorities believe Smollett paid two people, brothers Bola and Ola Osundairo, $3,500 to set up a fake hate crime attack to get media attention. A special prosecutor was appointed to this case and brought charges of disorderly conduct against the actor.
