Weeks after Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert made racist comments against Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, House Democrats are attempting to take action against it.  

Rep. Ayanna Pressley introduced a resolution on Wednesday that would punish Beobert for her comments. “Words have consequences, we must acknowledge that and respond with action, Pressley said in her announcement, According to NBC News. 

The resolution would remove Boebert from the House Budget Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee. It aims to “send a powerful message to every Muslim and every marginalized person who has ever questioned their place in this country, or in the halls of power,” NBC News reported.

In November, a video of Boebert making Islamophobic comments about Omar went viral. It shows Boebert speaking about an alleged interaction with Omar in an elevator at the Capitol where Boebert said, “I look to my left and there she is. Ilhan Omar. I said, ‘Well, if she doesn’t have a backpack, we should be fine.'”  

Following the backlash, Boebert apologized to the Muslim community on Twitter, saying, “I apologize to anyone in the Muslim community I offended with my comment about Rep. Omar.”  

The incident was not the first time Boebert has taken aim at Omar, according to The Hill. Earlier in Nov., while defending Republican Rep. Paul Gosar for sharing a video depicting violence towards Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Joe Biden, she referred to Omar as “The Jihad Squad member.” 

After Boebert’s comments went viral, Omar announced she received death threats, BNC previously reported.  

House Democrats Rep. Cori Bush, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rep. Pramila Jayapal have backed Pressley’s resolution.  

According to the Associated Press, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi argued punishing Beobert will give her the attention and additional financial fundraising she is seeking. “I don’t feel like talking about what the Republicans aren’t doing, or are doing, about the disgraceful, unacceptable behavior of their members,” Pelosi said, adding it is up to the GOP to handle its members.
