Derek Chauvin trial: Jury selection paused after appeal to reinstate third-degree murder charge

By: Alyssa Wilson

Jury selection in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was paused Monday.

According to the Associated Press, Judge Peter Cahill paused the process for at least one day due to an appeal over the possible reinstatement of the third-degree murder charge.

Chauvin currently faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside of the Hennepin County Government Center to show support for the late George Floyd.

They say they want peace, justice and for the nation to remember that George Floyd is not on trial.

Dr. Laura McNeal, BNC’s Chief Legal Correspondent spoke to two protesters who say they want to show Floyd’s family that Minneapolis stands in solidarity with them.

BNC host Charles Blow says legislature and courts in the country shield police officers.

“The police officer walks into the courtroom with the advantage,” Blow said. “There is the built-in stereotype of who we are and who they are.”

As jury selection proceeds Tuesday, the process will be complicated as the prosecution and defense search for unbiased jurors.

Searching for jurors who have not seen the widely-circulated video of Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd’s neck will prove to be another challenge.
