Diversity in Black Fetus Medical Illustration Has Twitter Astonished

In Summary

An aspiring neurosurgeon has created a medical illustration that has social media talking.

Aspiring neurosurgeon Chidiebere Ibe has Twitter talking after sharing his illustration of a black fetus in the womb.

The Kyiv Medical University student has a goal of increasing diversity in medicine and he wants to start with the illustrations in textbooks. “I’m black and black is beautiful! Diversity in Medical Illustration More of this should be encouraged,” Ibe said in a tweet where his illustration went viral.

Twitter users responded to the post, thrown by the lack of diversity and Black representation in medical textbooks and medical environments. “I’ve literally never seen a black [fetus] illustrated, ever,” one Twitter user, @Liyahsworld_xo tweeted.

Tuskegee studies and the story of Henrietta Lacks show that medical racism has an impact on Black maternal mortality and the services that people of color receive and experience within healthcare. Not only is Ibe’s artwork being introduced to medical textbooks important, but it also is bringing awareness to medical racism.
