In November 2021, Rittenhouse was acquitted by a jury of first-degree intentional homicide and four other felony charges in connection to the Kenosha, Wisconsin, shootings as it left two men dead and a third one injured.
Rittenhouse was 17 years old when the incident occurred and he claimed that he fired in self-defense during huge unrest in response to the police shooting of 29-year-old Jacob Blake, a Black man.
According to CNN, Black was the first person to testify during Rittenhouse’s trial. In November 2020, he was charged with two felony counts of giving a dangerous weapon to an individual under 18, which resulted in death. Black had pleaded not guilty and hoped that him taking the stand during his trial would lead to leniency in the case, according to CNN.

Prosecutor Thomas Binger cited three aspects of Rittenhouse’s trial that all contributed to the plea deal. First, the misdemeanor charge against Rittenhouse, which was possession of a harmful weapon by a minor, was dropped in his trial. Second, Binger said Black was forthcoming during the Rittenhouse trial, and third, Binger referred to Rittenhouse’s acquittal by a jury.
Black’s defense attorney Tony Cotton said that his client’s decision to plead no contest “avoids a criminal conviction.”
