Elizabeth Smart: Missing Women of Color Deserve More Media Attention

In Summary

Activist Elizabaeth Smart, who was kidnapped for 9 months in 2002 when she was 14 years old, said that more attention needs to given to missing women of color.

On a recent episode of Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk, activist Elizabeth Smart said she wishes missing women of color were given equal media coverage, according to NBC News.

“When I think of all of the people… I mean, so many, so many whose stories never even see the light of day. I live in this field every day, and all the time I hear stories I’ve never heard, and they’re not just, like, brand-new stories of ten minutes ago,” Smart says. “They’re stories of 5, 10, 20 years ago, and I’ve never heard of them. Someone is missing. Like, are they any less worthy? Has any less of a hole been left because they’re gone? No. Like, they’re somebody.”

Smart was kidnapped in 2002 when she was 14 years old from her Salt Lake City home.

She also talked about the case of Gabby Petito, the 22-year-old blogger, who was reported missing last month after going on a trip with her fiancé Brian Laundrie. Her body was discovered on Sept. 19. A medical examiner determined she died by strangulation.

“In Gabby’s case, in particular, I mean, I was alive and I came home, and hers tragically has not ended that way. But knowing what it’s like being on the other side and potentially what may have happened and what may have led up to her final moments and understanding probably a lot of what she was feeling, it’s heartbreaking,” Smart told Red Table Talk host Jada Pinkett Smith.

Smart is now a mother of three and has begun telling her kids about her harrowing experience.
