In Summary
“Finding Kendrick Johnson,” a documentary that takes an in-depth look at the events surrounding the Georgia teen’s death, is set to debut on Starz.A documentary on Kendrick Johnson, a Black teenager whose body was found in a rolled-up gym mat at his Georgia high school, is making its way to Starz, Variety reported.
Described as one of the “most important stories of our time” by one of the documentary’s producers, Finding Kendrick Johnson will explore the events after Georgia ruled the 17-year-old’s death an accident after his body was discovered at Valdosta’s Lowndes High School in January 2013.

The documentary is the work of writer and director Jason Pollock and is narrated by actress Jenifer Lewis.
Despite his body being found in an upright position in the gym mat, the state said that he died from positional asphyxiation.
NBC News reported Pollock has been investigating Kendrick’s death since 2017, and he and his family hope the documentary will encourage anyone with knowledge to come forward.
“Because it’s the Deep South, there is white silence on one side and a fear of retaliation on the Black side,” Pollock told NBC News.

The film, which was released in select theaters on July 30 and is distributed by Gravitas Ventures, features news footage, historical video, in-depth interviews with parents, family, friends and investigators.
Pollock told Variety his entire team is “just thrilled” to be working with Starz again following the success of his last film Stranger Fruit, which chronicled the 2014 police killing of Michael Brown.
“It was a no-brainer to bring them my next one,” he said. “Starz is a network that understands our culture like no one else in the game.”
In 2013, state officials deemed Johnson’s death an accident, claiming he plunged into the gym mat to retrieve a shoe and suffocated after he became caught inside, but his family disputes that account. They hired their own forensic pathologist, who concluded Johnson died as a result of non-accidental blunt force trauma.
BNC previously reported Johnson’s brain, heart, lungs, liver and other organs were missing when the body was examined by the family’s pathologist. Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk reopened his case in March, eight years after his death.
