A federal grand jury accused the officers of violating Floyd’s constitutional rights while he was restrained and face down on the pavement as he begged to breathe, the Associated Press reported.
Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao were named in the three-count indictment. Chauvin, Thao and Kueng are charged with violating Floyd’s right to be free from unreasonable seizure and excessive force. All of the officers are charged for their failure to give Floyd medical care.
Chauvin was also charged in a second indictment from an incident in 2017 where he knelt on a Black teenager. During his trial for the murder of Floyd, state prosecutors received videos of the 2017 incident. The videos allegedly show him striking a Black teenager in the head with a flashlight before holding him down with his knee for nearly 17 minutes while ignoring his cries for help.
