Former President Obama’s grandmother in Kenya dies at 99

Former President Barack Obama’s grandmother, Sarah Obama, died on Monday at a Kenyan hospital, he confirmed on Twitter. She was 99.

Kenyan officials confirmed with ABC News that Sarah Obama passed away around 4 a.m. local time at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral hospital in Kisumi.

“My family and I are mourning the loss of our beloved grandmother, Sarah Ogwel Onyango Obama, affectionately known to many as “Mama Sarah” but known to us as “Dani” or Granny,” the former president wrote on Twitter. “We will miss her dearly, but we’ll celebrate with gratitude her long and remarkable life.”

The step-grandmother to the former president, Sarah Obama, was married to Pres. Obama’s grandfather. She helped raise his father, Barack Obama, Sr.

During her life, she advocated for the education of girls and orphans in Kogelo village.

“I love education,” she reportedly said in an interview with the Associated Press in 2014. “If a woman gets an education, she will not only educate her family but educate the entire village.”

“Mama was sick with normal diseases. She did not die of COVID-19,” Sheik Musa Ismail, a spokesman for the family, told ABC News.

Sarah Obama will be buried on Tuesday, according to reports.
