George Floyd family attorney says $27M settlement should not impact Chauvin trial

By: Christina Santi

Ben Crump, the attorney for the family of George Floyd, appeared on BNC’s nightly special George Floyd Death: Justice on Trial on Wednesday. The civil rights and personal injury lawyer spoke to Sharon Reed about the details of the record $27 million settlement from the city of Minneapolis.

The defense team for Derek Chauvin, the ex-officer who was seen with his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes, asked that the trial be delayed because of the settlement agreement and Crump’s press conference. Two jurors have been dismissed in the case because they claim to be unable to be impartial to the amount of money awarded in the civil suit.

“I don’t want people to believe for one minute that Black people do not have the right to the 7th amendment,” Crump said to Reed about the historic payout. “The fact that we have a right to civil justice and try to conflate that with [Floyd’s] family accepting the city’s offer.”

Crump went on to say that he wants to stop the tradition of devaluing Black people in America.

George Floyd Death: Justice on Trial airs on BNC weeknights at 9 pm ET. To learn how to watch the special and other BNC programming head to https://bnc.tv/how-to-watch/.
