Hubert Davis hired as first Black head coach for UNC men’s basketball

Hubert Davis has been hired as the new head coach of the University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball team, the university’s board of trustees announced Monday during an emergency meeting.

With this appointment, Davis becomes the team’s fifth coach and first Black coach in its 60-year history, Inside Carolina reported. 

He played basketball for the North Carolina Tar Heels from 1988 to 1992. He then went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA for multiple teams, including the New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons, FOX 8 reported. 

In 2018, Davis was hired as the team’s assistant coach under Roy Williams. 

Williams led the team to three NCAA championships and announced his retirement in March after 33 seasons and 903 wins
