Hulu Releases Documentary on Janet Jackson Wardrobe Malfunction

In Summary

Hulu and The New York Times presents a film dedicated to a wardrobe malfunction which occurred during Jackson’s Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime performance.

Nearly 18 years later, Hulu has revealed a documentary that will explore Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction and its aftermath. In 2004, during Jackson’s Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime performance at the side of Justin Timberlake, a piece of Jackson’s clothing was ripped off by Timberlake.

The incident, also widely known as “Nipplegate,” resulted in an embarrassing and unintentional reveal of Jackson’s breast to 140 million viewers. This put her own career, along with Timberlake’s career and reputation, at risk.

Wayne Scot Lukas, the stylist responsible for the Super Bowl performance fit, tells Page Six the artist wants no part in the documentary, according to Nylon.

“[Janet] wants that documentary to go away,” Lukas said. “She didn’t ask for a ‘Free Janet’ documentary. She’s not interested.” Additionally, Jackson has requested for the stylist and those close to her to avoid any involvement with the film.

Lukas has been blamed for the malfunction and has even received death threats. “I really wish Janet or someone could come out now and say, ‘Leave my friend Wayne alone, he didn’t do anything wrong…’ as long as you keep me in the mix, fingers keep being pointed at me,” he said.

According to the press release, the film includes interviews from those who were at the controls that night in Houston, NFL and MTV executives and Jackson family members. In addition, the documentary will explore former head of CBS Les Moonves’ reported role in the results of the scandal.

In 2018, The Huffington Post reported Moonves allegedly attempted to ruin Jackson’s career during the fallout, which incorporated a $550,000 fine for the network.
