Juneteenth Museum to Open in Fort Worth

In Summary

The National Juneteenth Museum will be built as part of a mixed-use development.

A museum dedicated to sharing anecdotes about the significance of Juneteenth will soon open in Fort Worth, Texas, the city announced Tuesday.

The National Juneteenth Museum will be built as part of a mixed-use development.

President Biden officially made June 19 a federal holiday during the summer of 2021. The newly-formed holiday formally celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. Opal Lee, a 95-year-old Fort Worth resident who was present at the signing, had fought to get people to join her efforts in getting Juneteenth recognized.

Fort Worth acknowledged Lee as one of the forefront activists dedicated to making the vision of a museum a reality. The new museum will be constructed on the land that currently is the location for Lee’s Fort Worth Juneteenth Museum.

“To have lived long enough to see my walking and talking make an impact is one thing, but to know that a state-of-the-art museum that will house the actual pen that President Biden used to sign the bill, and many other exhibits, is coming to pass as well — I could do my holy dance again,” Lee said.

The new museum will preserve the legacy of the previous museum by continuing to be the epicenter of Juneteenth history and a center for discussions about freedom. This new property will also host events and exhibits that encourage dialogue on the global significance of freedom and the celebration of Juneteenth worldwide. The museum will offer seminars and lectures by renowned authorities on historical perspectives of freedom.

This new museum will be guided by a collaboration of activists, researchers and historians according to the city of Fort Worth.
