Kyle Rittenhouse wants the rifle he used to kill two people and injure another in Kenosha, Wisconsin, returned to him so he can ensure it’s “properly destroyed,” per CNN. 

Rittenhouse’s lawyer filed a court document asking for the release of his personal belongings, which included the AR-15 rifle, a 30-round capacity magazine, ammunition, an iPhone and some clothing, all of which had been taken by police when he was detained.

Rittenhouse was 17 years old when he killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber during social unrest following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man. Gaige Grosskreutz was wounded as well.  

He testified during his trial that he shot the victims in self-defense. “I didn’t do anything wrong; I was defending myself,” he said, per CBS News. 

The jury acquitted Rittenhouse on multiple charges, including first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide and first-degree attempted intentional homicide. 

The Washington Post reported Rittenhouse has since been designated as a defendant in a civil case brought by Huber’s parents, who believe he is “responsible” for their child’s death. Law professor Ayesha Bell Hardway noted that Rittenhouse’s lawyers’ self-defense position “won’t absolve him” in a civil trial.
