Letitia James Announces Run for NY Governor

In Summary

The news comes months after James’s office issued a report detailing numerous cases of sexual harassment by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, ultimately forcing him to resign.

Update 10/29/2021- 2:13 p.m.

It’s official!

New York Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James announced Friday she is running for governor in 2022.

“I’m running for Governor of New York because I have the experience, vision, and courage to take on the powerful on behalf of all New Yorkers. Let’s do this, together,” James said in a tweet officially announcing her run.

In her video, she laid out some of her accomplishments, such as suing the Trump administration, fighting the NRA and going after people who sexually harass women in the workplace “no matter how powerful the offenders.” This may have been a slight dig at former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who resigned after a damning report from James’s office detailing numerous cases of sexual harassment.

New York Attorney General Letitia James plans to run for governor, which would make her the first Black female governor in the country’s history, the Associated Press reported.

The news comes months after James’s office issued a report detailing numerous cases of sexual harassment by former Governor Andrew Cuomo, ultimately forcing him to resign.

Sources told AP that James would make an official announcement later this week.

James, the first woman and first Black person to be New York’s attorney general, may have a tough fight ahead of her if she enters the race. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who replaced Cuomo, will reportedly run to keep her seat, setting up a tough Democratic primary in New York.

During her time as attorney general, James has made a name for herself on the national stage. She’s investigated former President Donald Trump’s business dealings and has sued his administration dozens of times over its policies, such as the environment and immigration, per AP.

In August 2020, she went after the powerful NRA, alleging the gun lobby failed to follow state and federal laws and mismanaged funds, which resulted in the organization losing over $64 million in three years, BNC previously reported.
