Delayed But Not Denied: LeVar Burton Set To Host New Game Show

In Summary

After not being selected as the new host of “Jeopardy!” to fans' disappointment, LeVar Burton is getting another opportunity to host a game show.

LeVar Burton is finally getting his chance after being selected to host the game show Trivial Pursuit, in development at eOne.

The position is part of a deal between Hasbro’s eOne and LeVar Burton Entertainment, according to Variety. The group is developing Trivial Pursuit into a game show format.

“‘Trivial Pursuit’ is one of the best-known brands in the gaming universe,” Burton said. “I am thrilled to have partnered with Hasbro and eOne to bring this beloved game to market as a premium show for television.”

This comes after the former Reading Rainbow host had support from thousands of fans who wanted to see him become the new host of Jeopardy! Burton was selected as a guest host on the show but ultimately was not selected as the new full-time host set to replace longtime showrunner Alex Trebek who died of cancer in 2020.

Aside from hosting, Burton is also an actor with popular onscreen roles in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Roots. “Levar Burton has been an iconic member of American pop culture for decades from Roots to Reading Rainbow to Stark Trek and beyond,” said Tara Long, the president of global unscripted television for eOne. “His love for intellectual curiosity paired with his ability to connect with audiences worldwide make him the perfect partner to bring Hasbro’s beloved trivia game to households in a new and exciting way.”

The game Trivial Pursuit is available in more than 26 countries around the world and is in 17 languages. With more than 100 million copies sold, the game is in the Games Hall of Fame, Variety reported. The classic board game contains 2,400 questions in six categories, including geography, entertainment, history, art and literature, science and nature, and sports and leisure. Players must move around the board, answering questions along the way. The first player to receive six different colored wedges and answer the final question correctly wins.

Burton will serve as the host and be the executive producer along with Sangita Patel of Levar Burton Entertainment and Long and Geno McDermott of eOne. At this time, no network has picked up the series.
