The George Floyd bust was one of three statues that were installed in Union Square, the others being of John Lewis and Breonna Taylor. Unfortunately, on Oct. 3, Floyd’s statue was defaced with grey paint, according to CNN. It happened just a couple days after it was installed as it was part of Confront Art’s SEEINJUSTICE exhibition

“It was disgusting and downright wrong. We live in a world where they’re using brutal force against Black defenseless people and yet they’re using brutal force against Black statues. This is a problem,” Philonise Floyd, Floyd’s brother, said in an interview on CNN.

Beals is being accused of putting the gray paint on the statue as he was riding on his skateboard in the park, according to CNN. It comes at a costly price as it was about $2,000 to temporarily restore the bust and will cost $20,000 to fully restore it, according to a complaint.

After the Floyd statue was vandalized, volunteers came to the scene and were cleaning up the statue according to Confront Art co-founder Andrew Cohen.

“They went to the hardware and bought supplies out of their own pockets,” he said to CNN. “This is inspiring teamwork and support from the community.”
