Michelle Obama, celebrities demand congress to pass voting rights legislation

Celebrities have joined former first lady Michelle Obama in a call to action to get Americans to contact their senators and get them to support a massive voting rights bill.

On Tuesday, When We All Vote published a letter wanting “Americans of conscience and goodwill to join us in taking a stand for voting rights and to put the power more firmly in the hands of the people.”

Obama co-chairs the nonpartisan organization that dedicates itself to registering Americans to vote.

Over 60 celebrities, such as Kerry Washington, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tom Hanks, Keke Palmer and Leonardo DiCaprio, all signed the letter and called for the support of the For the People Act.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice, Republican state legislatures all around the country have introduced over 250 bills to restrict voter access, thus making it harder for people to vote.

GOP efforts came after the 2020 presidential election when former President Donald Trump called into question the legitimacy of the election results that saw him lose to President Joe Biden.

The For the People Act would grant greater access to voting across the country, would ban states from limiting absentee ballots, expand automatic voter registration, strengthen election security and would make states use independent redistricting commissions to create congressional district boundaries, according to CNN.

“We can do so much better as a country. But we’ll never be able to do it alone. Now is our best chance to protect and strengthen our democracy and put power back where it belongs—with the people. We ask you to stand with us,” the letter reads.
