Mo’Nique urges young Black women not wear bonnets in public

Oscar-winning actress and comedienne Mo’Nique shared an Instagram post urging young Black women not to wear bonnets, slippers, or wrap themselves in blankets in public spaces.

According to an article on Metro.co, she revealed her shock at seeing so many “young sistas” dressed casually while walking through an airport in Mississippi over the weekend.

‘I’ve been seeing it not just at the airport. I’ve been seeing it at the store, at the mall,” she said. “When did we lose our pride in representing ourselves? When did we slip away of let me make sure I’m presentable when I leave my home?”

In an article from the blog, LoveBScott, many take Mo’Nique’s comments as old school.

“Historically, there were stereotypical and disrespected tropes of being lower class or unkempt. Many Black people felt the only way to prove their humanity was by going over and above in presenting a polish exterior,” the blog read.

According to Metro, Mo’Nique holds that she is coming from a place of love and not criticism.

“I’m not saying you don’t have pride but the representation that you’re showing someone will have to ask you to know if you have it. It’s not to get a man … it is just your representation of you, my sweet babies,” she said.
