Eric Adams, New York City’s new mayor, was sworn into office just after the ball dropped in Times Square signaling the beginning of 2022. Ever since the day he was sworn into office, the city’s second mayor of color has been causing controversy.

First, he commented that “When a mayor has swagger, the city has swagger. We’ve allowed people to beat us down so much, that all we did was wallow in COVID.” He has also insisted schools remain open despite rising cases of the omicron variant.

Now, Adams has called on businesses all around the city to bring office workers back sooner than the spring deadline. He believes the delay is harmful for the economy of the most populous city in the country.

“I don’t know if my businesses are sharing with their employees, ‘You are part of the ecosystem of this city,’” Adams said at a press conference. “My low-skill workers, my cooks, my dishwashers, my messengers, my shoe shine people, those that work in Dunkin’ Donuts, they don’t have the academic skills to sit in the corner office. They need this.”

Additionally, he said New Yorkers who stay at home and work from their homes are “not helping other New Yorkers” and wants businesses to “come up with a closer deadline.”

“Four months of not having this business patronized, not having a restaurant patronized, not having business travelers come here to the city to go to our hotels,” Adams said. “That is going to be devastating for our economy.”
