In Summary
Investigators in Houston are looking into how eight people died and multiple others became injured at the opening night of Travis Scott's Astroworld Festival.Investigators are working to learn what caused eight people to die at the Astroworld Festival in Houston on Friday night.
According to the Associated Press, officials plan to use videos, witness interviews and review the concert’s procedures to learn what went wrong on the event’s opening night.
The incident began around 9:15 p.m. when the crowd moved and pushed forward toward the stage, ABC 13 Houston reported. Nearly 50,000 people were in attendance at the sold-out concert. “The crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage, and people began to panic,” Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said.

John Grissett, who attended the concert, spoke to BNC about the moment chaos began to unfold. “It wasn’t enough space for all the people there,” he said as he described seeing concertgoers getting trampled. During Travis Scott’s performance, Grissett said he began to feel like the crowd was tight and needed to get his family out. “Once that crowd starts moving, it’s almost like an ocean wave,” he said.
The people killed at the event included teenagers, with the youngest being just 14. More than 300 people were treated at the concert’s field hospital and 13 people remained hospitalized over the weekend, the Associated Press reported.
Investigators plan to examine the design of the safety barriers at the concert and whether crowds were directed around the area correctly. Authorities are also set to investigate what might have incited the crowd causing people to move erratically and the number of security personnel at the event.
Rumors circulated that someone was injecting people with a needle at the event. According to ABC 13 Houston, Police Chief Troy Finner said a security guard said he felt a prick in his neck before passing out, but it is believed to be an isolated incident. Finner asked people to avoid speculation and respect the victims. “A lot of narratives are out there right now on social media. I think that all of us need to be respectful of the families and make sure we follow the facts and evidence,” he said.
Scott released a statement on Saturday, saying, “I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astrworld Festival. Houston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life.”
According to Yahoo! Entertainment, Scott’s girlfriend Kylie Jenner posted a statement on her Instagram story, saying,” Travis and I are broken and devastated. My thoughts and prayers are with all who lost their lives, were injured or [were] affected in any way by yesterday’s events. And also for Travis, who I know cares deeply for his fans and the Houston community.” Jenner also stated she and Scott were unaware of the fatalities initially and only learned of them once the show stopped.
So far, two lawsuits have been filed relating to the incident. Attorneys for Manuel Souza sued Scott and Live Nation for their client who was injured. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump has filed a lawsuit on behalf of Noah Gutierrez.
