‘Old Town Road’ Leads Lil Nas X Back to Atlanta to Celebrate His Own Day

Wednesday, October 20, has officially been declared "Lil Nas X Day" in his Atlanta hometown. 

Lil Nas X’s trip down “Old Town Road” has brought him back to Atlanta, where he was honored for his charitable work in the city and received a proclamation declaring Lil Nas X Day, per iHeart’s Kiyonna Anthony

The document from Atlanta City Council’s first Black LGBTQ+ member Antonio Brown read, “Whereas, the Atlanta City Council is pleased to recognize Lil Nas X for his success in the world of music, entertainment and popular culture.”

It went on to highlight how the two-time Grammy Award-winning rapper gained tremendous success in 2019 after the release of his smash single “Old Town Road,” which spent a record-breaking 19 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. His popularity increased with his EP, which has been streamed over 3 billion times.  

The trend continued with the Sept. 17, 2021, release of his debut album Montero, which included “Industry Baby,” his third Hot 100 success. 

“He has made a considerable impact on the LGBTQ community by reshaping how society accepts LGBTQ artists within the music industry and empowering others to break barriers and be more open, expressive, and personal through music and art,” per the proclamation. 

Prior to the release of his album Montero, Lil Nas X raised millions for LGBTQ+ and human rights nonprofit organizations by providing a link to a “baby registry” that featured each of the 15 track names alongside a grassroots nonprofit group with a button that let users donate directly to the organization, per NBC News’ Jo YurcabaHe’s also teamed up with The Bail Project, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending cash bail, which is one of the main drivers of mass imprisonment and structural racism in the criminal justice system in the United States.

“This is amazing. I would have not have imagined I would be here four years ago when I was in my sister’s room on the floor,” the 22-year-old renowned rapper said, per Fox 5 Atlanta. “What else can I say? This is incredible, man. Life just keeps getting better.” 

TMZ reports that Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kandi Burruss and her husband Todd Tucker, as well as Miss Lawrence, were among celebrities at the event to see Lil Nas X receive the honor.
