A gunman opened fire on Grambling State during its homecoming events on campus early Sunday morning.A gunman opened fire on students at Grambling State University, killing one person and injuring seven others during the second deadly shooting at the college within the past week.
According to a statement by the university, the deadly shooting occurred at 1:00 a.m., when students reported multiple shots in the quad area of campus. One student was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while others were transported to the hospital.
Police have not identified the shooter or reveal the identities of the victims.
Louisiana State Police public information officer Michael Reichardt said there is no motive for the shooting.
Students were participating in homecoming events in the McCall Dining Center when the shooting occurred.

The students remained in the hall until university police cleared them.
“With all of our planning and all of our coordination between our chief, assistant chief and the entire Grambling State University Police Department, along with our Sheriff Stephen Williams, local parish, regional and state law enforcement partners, we still find ourselves grieving the loss of life and injuries just as too many communities in our country have experienced, as well,” said Grambling State President Rick Gallot.
On Oct. 13, two people not enrolled at the university shot at each other, leaving one dead and the other injured.
Crossfire from the shooting injured two GSU students, but they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
There is a Louisiana State Police arrest warrant for Jatavious “Rabbit” Carroll. He was charged with murder.
“Our students come here for an education and far too often it’s outsiders who have created these situations that have put life and limb into in danger,” Gallot said. “That’s not why we’re here. That’s not what we’re about after 120 years, and so again, our priority is keeping our students safe.”
