The news was announced in a press release Wednesday.
The companies said the vaccine was “well-tolerated” by the age group, with trial participants experiencing similar side effects seen in young adults.
Although children are less likely to die from COVID-19, it is still possible for them to spread the virus.
Albert Bourla, Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, said the companies are “encouraged by the clinical trial data.”
The companies plan to submit the data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Emergency Management Agency to amend the vaccine’s Emergency Use Authorization.
Last week, Pfizer and BioNTech began testing its COVID-19 vaccine on children between the ages of 6 months and 11 years old.

Currently, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is used in people 16 years old and older, while the Moderna vaccine is not cleared for people under 18.
No COVID-19 vaccine has been authorized for children to use.
