Campus Police File Multimillion Dollar Damage Claim After Alleged Racist Culture

By Briasia Russ

From claims of harsh comments to open hostility, the officers at the University of Washington came together to fill a multimillion-dollar damage claim.

According to The Daily, the officers didn’t specify the names of who made the comments. Instead, they emphasized that the racial comments made their jobs unbearable.

Officer Karin Young at the university reported in her claim that she would find bananas at her locker, with one including a note calling her a monkey.

Officer Hamani Nowlen reported being hit with a stick object and being told “you people should be used to getting hit with these.”

Another officer, Damien Taylor, reported a group of white officers making comments about George Floyd.

His Black a– got what he deserved.”

Unfortunately, this is not the first time UW has faced racism and discrimination issues within their workplace. According to The Daily, in 2008, the university received a Civil Rights lawsuit for discrimination against Black female officers and Jewish officers.

According to The Daily, the University of Washington has 60 days to settle the claim before the officers take the matter to court.
