A police officer was fatally stabbed Tuesday after gunfire erupted outside the Pentagon, sources told CNN.
“The Pentagon Force Protection Agency mourns the tragic loss of a Pentagon Police Officer killed during this morning’s incident at the Pentagon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family,” it said.
BNC has identified Iraq war veteran George Gonalez as the officer killed in the attack.
Woodrow Kusse, head of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, which oversees security at the Pentagon, did not provide many details about the incident other than “several injuries resulted from the incident,” citing the ongoing investigation, according to CNN.
“The incident is over, the scene is secure, and most importantly, there is no continuing threat to our community,” Kusse said.
Police opened fire on the suspect when the attack began outside the metro entrance of the Pentagon. The suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement.
The Pentagon was placed on lockdown during the incident but was shortly reopened after.
