Pregnant Philadelphia Woman Gunned Down After Baby Shower

A pregnant woman in Philadelphia was gunned down outside of her home while unloading gifts from her baby shower.  

A pregnant woman who was unloading gifts from her baby shower was shot and killed outside of a home in Philadelphia on Saturday night.  

According to ABC News, the 32-year-old woman was seven months pregnant. After being shot, she was taken to the Einstein Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead and doctors were unable to save her child.

Investigators worked over the weekend to identify suspects and a motive in the killing. Deputy Police Commissioner Christine Coulter said, “The person who did this couldn’t be more cowardly.” Coulter also believes the woman may have been the intended victim. “When I look at this situation, it looks like someone was targeting her,” Coulter said.

The shooting took place around 8:30 p.m. in Northeast Philadelphia. The woman returned home from her baby shower and was unloading gifts from her car parked outside of her home in the Lawncrest neighborhood, ABC News reported.  

A police officer on patrol heard the gunshots two blocks away and found the pregnant woman with gunshot wounds to her head and stomach. Police collected at least 11 shell casings from the area.  

Like many other major U.S. cities, Philadelphia is seeing a rise in gun violence. In the city of brotherly love, there have been 491 homicides as of November 17, 2021, which is a 13% increase from 2020. More than 1,500 people in the city were victims of nonfatal gun violence, according to the Office of the City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart.

Coulter said officials are doing all they can, but they “can’t stop people who are intent on shooting somebody.” According to Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney, the city is offering a $50,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
